strengthening river basin organisations through institutional tools and approaches

The CSIR, in partnership with SIWI and PRA was appointed by GTZ to support the strengthening of River Basin Organisations (RBOs) in SADC to improve transboundary water resources management and development. This project has two parallel but complimentary goals:

In the short and medium term, RBOs need to be empowered to execute their mandate effectively. This relies, amongst other things, on tools and approaches to understand key drivers, to facilitate processes and to provide relevant information towards effective action.

In the medium to long term, the mandate of RBOs need to be strengthened towards executive authority to undertake action, since effective management of a shared river basin requires an institution that is mandated to act on the common interests of the riparian states.
